The boiling waters discharged at Yellowstone National Park's Mammoth Hot Springs lose heat as they descend the mineral terraces, creating "Goldilocks Zones" for an array of bacteria known as thermophiles and extremophiles because they can thrive in conditions one wouldn't expect life to survive in. Each color on the terraces is indicative of the temperature that is optimal for specific species.
