Artist's Description
The boiling waters discharged at Yellowstone National Park's Mammoth Hot Springs lose heat as they descend the mineral terraces, creating "Goldilocks Zones" for an array of bacteria known as thermophiles and extremophiles because they can thrive in conditions one wouldn't expect life to survive in. Each color on the terraces is indicative of the temperature that is optimal for specific species.

Sean Griffin (b. 1949- ) is an award-winning American fine art and portrait photographer who divides his time between the beautiful Pacific Northwest of the United States and the lush Sonoran Desert of Arizona. His work has been recognized by The Smithsonian, among others. In addition to his paid work, he is a volunteer photographer for Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep, a non-profit organization providing remembrance photos for families whose babies will not be coming home from the hospital.
