Description
Double check this afternoon when I was walking along the pond at the Yuma conservation garden, and saw a couple of ducks that appeared to have a bouffant hairdos. I had not seen such a duck before, and wondered if it might be the after effects of a duck mating ritual, but research showed that it was a mistaken hypothesis. The crested duck is a sub species of the domestic mallard, and is the result of a genetic mutation that causes the skull to not fully close at birth. Instead, the gap is filled with fatty tissue, from which the bouffant feathers emerge.
