Description
The Ocotillo is an amazing desert plant. Much of the year it’s spindly arms reach for the heavens, covered in nothing but spines and appearing dead to the world. But within days of a drenching downpour, those limbers will be covered in small leathery leaves. Soon after, the bloom the ocotillo (fiery torch) emerges at the tips, and the leaves dry up and fall the ground. The blooms may linger for a few weeks, as the photograph illustrates. Multiple blooms are possible throw out the year, depending on rainfall. This image was captured along the Palm Canyon Trail in Kofa National Wildlife Refuge in southwest Arizona.
