Artist's Description

The largest of a community of cliff dwellings near Camp Verde, Arizona, Montezuma Castle was built and occupied by the Sinagua (literally, "without water") people between about 1100 AD and 1425, when the dwellings were abandoned - not just here but across the Southwest. The engineering achievement alone is impressive, given that timbers, water and building materials had to be hauled 90 feet up a cliff face using only ropes and ladders. The dwelling was neither a castle nor connected to the Aztec leader Montezuma in any way. It's more accurate to describe it as a pre-Columbian condominium, with at least 20 separate dwellings in the structure.
