Description
The iconic saguaro cactus is an icon of Arizona's Sonora Desert. About 199,999 times out of 200,000, the head of the saguaro forms normally, resembling a finger pointing upward. But that 1-in-200,000th time, the cells in the tip divide outward rather than in a circular formation, creating a fan-like crown. Popularly known as "crested" saguaros, the proper term is tristate saguaro. More than 2,000 have been identified in Arizona.
