Artist's Description

Of the seven subspecies of caribou, two are now extinct. Of the remaining five, only one remains in the United States - a small population of 27 found in the southern Selkirk Mountains of northeastern Washington state and Idaho. This one was found at Northwest Trek Wildlife Park near Eatonville, Washington, USA. Once found across the northern states, the main factor reducing caribou numbers is the timber harvesting. Caribou diet consists mainly of tree-growing lichens. It takes many years before a tree becomes a host for lichens.
