Artist's Description

The Tarantula Hawk isn't a hawk; it's a wasp - one of the largest - and it hunts tarantulas. The females paralyze, but do not kill, tarantulas, then put them in a nest, lay an egg on them, and the larva chews its way into the still-living tarantula's body, eating everything except the vital organs so that it doesn't kill the tarantula. It is renowned as having the second-most painful sting in nature, but the pain is brief and doesn't require treatment. It has few natural enemies besides roadrunners.
