Description
The chuckwalla is a large lizard, growing to 18" long (third in size behind the Gila Monster and the Desert Iguana in the United States) and a denizen of the Mojave and Sonora deserts in the American Southwest. An herbivore, its folds of loose skin allow it to flatten its body and fight into tight crevices to avoid danger. This one was found at Joshua Tree National Park in California.
