Description
A light snowfall caresses the rust-colored bark and smooth golden trunk of the Pacific Madrona tree (Arbutus menziesii), a native to America's coast growing within 25 miles of salt water. It's bark is a source of salt to wild mammals, and it is unusual in that it's outer bark peels away, exposing the trunk, which continues to grow. This image was captured on Anderson Island, in Washington state's Puget Sound.
